Turmeric Peas Pilaf

by thecurrytheory

Hello food lovers…..any rice lovers there? I love RICE! can’t eat a meal without it, I would rather eat rice than pasta any day! My mom is a supreme genius in making rice! I mean “literally” I could eat her rice day and night …which is so bad I know but it’s that addictive. This pulao has always been my childhood favorite, mom made this on special occasions only. It’s great with any curries or by itself. Vegan food lovers this is a recipe for you.

 My favorite rice is ready.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Basmati rice or any long grain rice will work
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • Half or quarter of onion thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon of whole garam masala (1 cinnamon stick, 2 cardamom pods, 3 cloves)
  • 3-4 tablespoon oil (vegetable or any)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger garlic cilantro paste OR ginger garlic paste that is readily available at any Indian grocery store
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 cup peas
  • Salt to taste (1 teaspoon)

Instructions

  1. Start by washing the Basmati rice thoroughly and set it aside.
  2. In a pot heat the oil on medium flame until hot, add in the whole garam masala (cinnamon stick, cardamom and cloves) to the pot, let it sputter, and then add the thinly sliced onions and fry them well, until golden brown.
  3. Add in the ginger garlic cilantro paste or ginger garlic paste and mix well.
  4. Transfer the washed rice it to the pot.
  5. Add 2 cups of warm water and stir well.
  6. Add turmeric powder and salt to taste and stir. Cover and cook on a medium flame for about 10 mins.
  7. Turn the flame low after 56 mins and then add in the sweet peas to the rice, by adding the pea later it holds the fresh green color of the peas without over cooking them. Cover and cook on low flame for about another 6-7 mins or Until the rice is cooked grainy and fluffy.
  8. Enjoy it with a side salad or your favorite curry. (Discard the whole garam masala spices, do not eat them, they are only goo for flavor and aroma)
